Once you have worked out your financial position and how much you can afford to pay towards the rent arrears you're now in a position to offer a repayment plan to the landlord. If a one off lump sum payment is not possible, then this would normally be an amount over and above the weekly/monthly rental charge that will start to reduce the arrears.
Present your offer of repayment to the landlord, explaining how and when payments will be made. Make sure that the amount you offer is affordable for you, otherwise you may struggle to pay and this can lead to eviction action.
If you rent from a Local Authority or Housing Association they will often have specific staff who deal with rent arrears and they should agree to your offer of repayment in line with their rent arrears recovery policy.
