Council tax reductions
Council tax is also based on the number of adults in the property. If you are the only person aged 18 or over in the property you will be entitled to a 25% single person discount.
There are also some circumstances where those over 18 may not be classed as adults for the purposes of calculating council tax and a discount can still be applied.
A few examples of this are:
- Students in full time education at college or university.
- People on some apprenticeship courses.
- People with a severe mental impairment.
- Live-in carers who look after someone who is not their child under 18, spouse or partner.
A full list of reductions and exemptions are available on your local authority’s website. Exemptions and discounts applied by Glasgow City Council are here (opens in a new tab).
Low income and council tax support
If you are on a low income you may be entitled to help towards the cost of paying your bill through council tax reduction, also known as council tax support. An application can be made through your local council. Eligibility is determined by your income, capital or savings and who else lives with you in the property.
